Series resistors and shunt caps are used to reverse engineer the input matching for an old KVG 9MHz LSB crystal filter. In a real implementation, the resistors could be rotary trimmer resistors and the capacitors could be rotary trimmer caps. Adjust them all in turn to get the best match.
A normalisation network is also used to help predict the actual insertion loss of the crystal filter when matched.
The video shows how successful this technique is, as the passband response and insertion loss agrees with the direct method using a resistance in series with a capacitive reactance.
The filter appears to require a source of about 960 ohms in parallel with about 24pF to give the best match. The insertion loss is just over 2dB.
