Who Pays for Your FREE UPI Payment? (New Fee Explained)

Описание: You paid ₹20 for chai. No fee. Nothing. But UPI handles more than 24 billion payments a month, and running it costs real money. So who's paying? And why is a new 0.4% fee coming right after Diwali?

In 7 minutes: what happens when you tap Pay, who pays for UPI today (banks, taxpayers, and your attention), how PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm make money, the new fee rules, and what to watch out for.

The short version: payments to friends stay free. Shop payments of ₹2,000 or less stay free. Bigger shops pay 0.4% on payments above ₹2,000, capped at ₹300. The shop pays, not you, and no shop is allowed to add a "UPI surcharge".
