Author Kayleen Reusser reads stories from her collection of World War II books, based on her interviews with 260 veterans.
Bonnie Calhoun Neuenschwander Habegger’s story is taken from Reusser’s book 'Born To Be Soldiers: Those Plucky Women of World War II.'
A shorter version of Habegger’s story appears in Book 1 of Reusser’s World War II Legacies book: We Fought to Win: American World War II Veterans Share Their Stories.
Excerpts from video:
When the Army needed nurses during the war, Bonnie Calhoun Habegger of Kaufman, Texas, signed up. The oldest of 10 children, she allowed the Army to cover the costs of her books, tuition, and lodging. In return, she enlisted in the Army to help with medical needs after the end of the war.
“I wanted to do what I could to help our country,” she said. “We learned to march to meals, participate in daily exercises and salute and stand at attention.”
Habegger later volunteered to serve in France and Germany. She fell in love with a soldier she had met overseas and married him. After the war, she continued her nursing career while raising a family.
