There are three species of peafowl. The two most recognizable species are the blue, or Indian, peacock (Pavo cristatus) and the green, or Javanese, peacock (Pavo muticus). The Congo peacock (Afropavo congensis) was discovered in 1936.
Albino peacocks, also called white peacocks, are a rare mutation of the Indian blue peafowl caused by a genetic condition called leucism. This condition prevents melanin from being deposited in the feathers, resulting in their all-white plumage. While often referred to as albino, they are not technically albino, as they still have pigment in their skin and eyes.
They are extremely rare in the wild and are often bred in captivity. Their white feathers can symbolize purity, innocence, and new beginnings. The absence of color can create a sense of ethereal beauty and elegance. Their white feathers stand out beautifully against the backdrop of nature, like lush green trees and parks.
However, it's important to note that while white peacocks may be beautiful to humans, they can face challenges in attracting mates in the wild. Their lack of color makes it harder for them to display their "train" feathers, which are used to attract peahens.
