In this video I visit Damascus, Syria for the first time during the holy month of Ramadan and show what life is really like in the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. I travel from Beirut, Lebanon to Damascus using public transportation, starting from Cola Station in Beirut, taking a shared taxi to Chtoura in the Bekaa Valley, and then crossing the Lebanon Syria border before arriving in the Syrian capital. I explain the visa process, border crossing experience, cash situation, and how to exchange money when entering Syria.
After arriving in Damascus, my first stop is the historic Umayyad Mosque, where I attend Jummah prayer inside one of the most important mosques in the Islamic world. The Umayyad Mosque is more than 1,300 years old and stands on a site that has been used for worship for thousands of years, making it one of the most significant religious landmarks in the Middle East.
From there I walk through Old Damascus, often called the oldest city in the world, and explore the famous Souq Al Hamidiyah, the main market filled with shops, fabrics, spices, and traditional Syrian street food. The narrow alleys, stone buildings, and historic atmosphere make this one of the most unique places in the Middle East.
I also visit beautiful Damascene courtyard hotels, including Beit Zafran Hotel De Charme, and talk about the traditional architecture of old Damascus homes that have been converted into boutique hotels with hidden courtyards and fountains.
As the sun sets, I experience my first iftar in Damascus during Ramadan. I try traditional Syrian dishes including shakriyeh, fatteh, and the famous Ramadan drink jalab, a sweet drink made from dates, grape molasses, and pine nuts that is popular throughout Syria during Ramadan.
Later in the evening I watch a traditional Syrian Ramadan performance called Mawlaweyeh, where dancers spin in colorful skirts in a spiritual performance rooted in Sufi traditions.
Damascus is also famous for its historic bathhouses, so I visit Hammam Al Silsila, one of the oldest hammams in the city that has been operating for hundreds of years. I show what a traditional Syrian bathhouse experience is like and why hammams remain an important part of Syrian culture.
To end the night I visit Abo Abdoh, one of the most famous juice shops in Damascus where locals gather late into the night for fresh juices and desserts during Ramadan.
This video shows a side of Damascus and Syria that most people never see. From ancient mosques and historic markets to Ramadan traditions, food, and everyday life in one of the world’s oldest cities.
