Miss Marple is a specially trained African Giant Rat who detects landmines by smell. Raised in Apopo’s Tanzanian training lab, she learns to identify explosives and is later deployed to mine-infested Mozambique, where rat teams help clear dangerous fields and save countless lives.
Giant rats are intelligent, fast learners with an excellent sense of smell. Trainers like Niko Saroni gradually teach them to recognise explosive scents, a process that takes about a year. Despite local prejudice—rats are often seen as pests—the animals work eagerly for treats like bananas or nuts.
Apopo employs around 70 staff and also trains rats to detect tuberculosis and even search rubble with tiny cameras. This film follows Miss Marple through her demanding training and her first steps toward becoming a true hero rat.
