At height, even small mistakes can become dangerous if they’re not corrected quickly and properly. A technician may clip into the wrong device or find themselves needing to change direction unexpectedly.
• Ascending on a descender teaches you how to overcome being attached to the wrong device for upward movement.
• Descending on an ascender shows you how to move safely if you’ve clipped into the wrong tool but need to go down.
• Both skills build confidence, adaptability, and self-reliance — qualities every rope access technician must develop.

These error recovery methods are always included in the Level 1 syllabus and assessment, ensuring that technicians can manage unexpected situations under supervision.
