Ludwig van Beethoven was a very original composer who studied human characters and passions and tried to embody them in sounds. I think there was always an initial image or story behind, but he would not disclose it to us. Beethoven wanted his listeners to create their own stories, their own poetry, and their own fantasias from his poems in tone.
