OVERVIEW
Carl Maria von Weber’s Piano Sonata No.1 in C major, Op.24 was composed between 1812 and 1814 and published in 1816.
It is the first of his four piano sonatas and reflects Weber’s dual identity as both a pioneering Romantic composer and a virtuoso pianist.
The work is large in scope, technically demanding, and infused with the dramatic flair and color that Weber is best known for in his operas (especially Der Freischütz).
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Weber (1786–1826) was one of the earliest composers to bridge Classical clarity with Romantic expressivity, especially in piano writing.
At the time of this sonata’s composition, Beethoven’s middle-period sonatas were widely admired, and Weber sought to establish his own voice within this genre.
The sonata was dedicated to Duke Ludwig of Württemberg, reflecting Weber’s connections with aristocratic patrons during his career.
Unlike Beethoven, Weber’s sonatas were less about philosophical depth and more about brilliance, color, and theatrical character, which foreshadowed the Romantic piano tradition (Liszt, Chopin, Schumann).
MUSICAL SIGNIFICANCE
This sonata marks Weber’s ambition to place himself alongside Beethoven in the piano sonata tradition, though with a distinctively operatic and virtuoso flair.
It is less often performed today compared to Chopin or Schumann, but in its time it was admired for its originality and pianistic brilliance.
The sonata shows early hallmarks of Romantic piano music: sweeping gestures, harmonic adventurousness, and contrasts between lyrical intimacy and stormy drama.
Its influence can be felt on later Romantic pianists, particularly Liszt, who greatly admired Weber.
