SUNK ISLAND: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #26 of 172

Описание: Time for an actual island! Yes it's been a while since the channel covered Canvey Island a long time ago now, so I think one is overdue don't you? The trouble is, without actually knowing this is an island, you wouldn't believe me if I told you! You see, this one started life as nothing more than a sandbank in the Humber Estuary and was purposely reclaimed by Colonel Gilby.

The result would be an island rich in fertile soil, which needed next to no fertilizer, making it perfect for farming. Once separated from the mainland by the Patrington Channel, the island is now fully connected to the East Riding of Yorkshire, save for a few bits and bobs here and there where the water channels are deep enough to warrant a bridge, like for example at Stone Creek.

Stone Creek is so named because it was the place that barges landed stones in the 18th century to connect the island to the mainland, and once the Patrington Channel had silted up, farms were able to move onto the land, and some fifteen of them were active within a few years, not to mention some prawns and shrimps were harvested at Stone Creek too.

The island was also important in WWI and WWII, being part of the Humber GDA, and there are at least two anti aircraft battery facilities on the island. The Greenwich Meridien also runs through it, and we haven't yet spoken about the buildings here - the church at the very centre of the island is a sight to behold, as is the amazing old schoolhouse which is right next door.

If you come here, expect to see lots of big sky and not a lot of people, but remember this is an island, and one that not a lot of people know about! This is the story of SUNK ISLAND.
