This is a basic scud pattern that always works great for me. I tend to have green-colored scuds in my water, but you can change up the color to match yours just by changing the dubbing color.
Begin by adding several wraps of lead wire to the hook, compress the wraps together, and slide them more towards the middle of the hook. Start your thread in front of the lead wraps and pull the tag end towards the hook bend tying over the top of the thread and the lead wraps moving towards the back. After lying a thread base deep into the hook bend, tie in seven to nine fibers from a dyed olive Mallard flank feather. Once secured, remove the waste and move your thread up a few eye lengths behind the hook eye. Tie in six or seven more Mallard flank fibers so the ends extend over the hook eye. Remove the waste and travel to the back end of the lead wraps.
Tie in a piece of small silver wire to use as the ribbing. Next, tie in a tapered piece of olive scudback, stretching it as you secure it down to where the thread begins deep in the hook bend. Dub your thread with Whitlock's dubbing in a lime (or very light green color) and dub the body from the back end to a few eye lengths in front of the hook eye. At this point, I will use a dubbing brush to pull out dubbing fibers. Brush downward from each side. These fibers will become the scud's legs.
After stroking down the loosened fibers, pull the scudback up over the center top of the hook shank and secure it behind the hook eye. Once secure, remove the waste. Next start taking open wraps of the silver wire from the back to the front of the fly. Remove the balance of the wire. Stroke the dubbing fibers down once more and then cut them horizontally just above the hook point to get nice even legs on the scud. You can whip finish the fly and remove the thread.
For durability and looks, I add a thin coat of UV resin over the scudback. Make sure it is an even coat - front to back - and that the sides of the scudback are covered as well. Cure the UV with a UV light and the fly is complete.
