When Should I Update My Book? When Is It Time For A New Edition? Self-Publishing Questions Answered

Typos - Then umber one way to find your most stubborn typos is to hit publish. You read it a million times. You had editors and proofreaders and beta readers and your best friend read it. Those stubborn typos persisted. And lo and behold, you hit publish and there they are. Unless you have mispelled something to the point where it changes the meaning, collect these. I promise it won’t be the last typo to pop out. Maybe when you have 10-12. Or if it’s been six mmonths post publication and you only found 5, okay then update it. Reupload. Done. DO NOT make the update 24 hours before launch and risk your preorders being cancelled. Don’t do that. Everyone has typos.

Content is out of date/inaccurate - For my Author Your Ambition series of books I decided to make them very tactical and about the minutia of self-publishing. But, with that means the books are dated to that moment in time. So when companies merge, they allow for more formats, they reject formats, my books need to be updated. I could probably update them all once a month with new softwares and options. But that would drive me crazy. If I can update them annually, that’s great. But occasionally they need an overhaul. I’ve tried to err on the side of update once. If the information shows fewer options than are currently available, okay. I can add that later. If the information is now out of date to where I say people can do something that they cannot anymore, okay, this needs updated ASAP. I think for non-fiction it is important to understand what you are trying to help your audience with. Does the degree to which it is outdated put people in a bad spot. Gotta fix that.

You have earned enough to reinvest in improvements- When I started out, I didn’t have a ton of funds to invest in my books. I did promise to reinvest royalties to be able to improve them over time. I’ve redone the covers for Enemies of Peace and now The Author Your Ambition series. I’ve redone interior formatting. It’s okay to relaunch with a new cover. You may get a second chance to find new readers.

You realize you need to - For my book Nailbiters, I was writing Architects and i knew i was going to narrate Nailbiters so I went through reading it. And wow, in 5 years I had improved my writing so much, and had so much editorial feedback,I knew i could make that book better. Stronger sentences and descriptions. Just a smoother read. So I fixed it. Rolled out the second edition. Why not make it better if you can? I also got to include the first pages of Architects as well.

Each revision doesn’t require a new edition. The rule of thumb is 10% of content changed constitutes a new edition. A few typos, eh just update a fresh file. A new cover, new chapter, revised content - that might need a second edition. I have several videos on how to do a second edition as well as my second editions checklist that you can check out.
