Lyrics
In a park in Rathfarnham a flag flies wild and high
Thanks to a man and his Irish freedom cry
A teacher; and a poet; a leader; and a friend;
A brother; and a son; who fought until the end.
With a patriot’s spirit he rebelled British rule
Promoted Irish ways through the building of a school
But such an approach only took him so far
So a movement began for the clamouring of arms.
With the help of Mac Donagh, Con Colbert and the ‘Dogs’
In the basement of Scoil Éanna they built their rebels bombs
Then they stormed Dublin City and they took the GPO
Declared a sovereign nation, proclaimed it’s time to go.
He told the people’s master “we’ll take what you won’t give”
Our rights and our liberties; and an Irish way to live
They charged him with treason, before the soldiers came
Then rounded up his men, while cursing him by name.
Surrendered on the Saturday to a Brigadier
One of the founding fathers of the Irish volunteers
Was sent to Arbour Hill, then Kilmainham gaol
But Pádraic would not falter, cause his mission could not fail.
Happy to accept his fate as a gift from God
He walked into the breaker’s yard to face his firing squad
To die a soldier’s death for Ireland to be free
Was the sacrifice he made for you and for me
So let us remember Pádraic Pearse today
Born 10th of November died the 3rd day of May
A teacher, and a poet, a leader, and a friend,
a brother, and a son who fought until the end.
