We are trying to measure one of the lightest particles in the universe with the KamLAND detector in Japan: the neutrino. These tiny particles are extremely difficult to observe because they are light, move super fast (close to the speed of light), and fly through everything! 🚀 They almost never interact with a material, but when they do, we want to be able to see this and not confuse it with other background particles. That's why it's so important to have a very clean detector where the only interactions are from neutrinos. 🧽
Our detector is filled with a liquid that lights up when a particle like the neutrino moves through. However, the liquid is polluted with other particles, so we first clean it through a series of distillation techniques that pull these other particles out of our liquid!
