STATE CAPITOL, PHOENIX – State Representative Walt Blackman will host a press conference Tuesday, February 24, 2026, recognizing Arizona Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day and honoring Joseph Torkildson, MD, Banner Children’s at Desert pediatric oncologist, for more than 40 years caring for Arizona children battling cancer.
Pediatric cancer affects families across Arizona every year, bringing long hospital stays, financial strain, and life changing uncertainty. The event will highlight the need for continued awareness, support for families, and sustained focus on pediatric cancer care.
“As legislators, we fight for families, and few fights are tougher than watching your child face cancer,” said Representative Walt Blackman. “Arizona Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day is a public reminder that these kids and parents are not alone. We honor Dr. Joseph Torkildson because he showed up for decades when families needed someone steady, skilled, and relentless in their corner. We should match that same level of seriousness with awareness, support, and action that helps kids get the care they deserve.”
The proclamation will be specially read by Aaliyah Jensen and Axel Alcantar.
