Hailing from Revere, Massachusetts, Tony Conigliaro was a baseball player with the Boston Red Sox and the California Angels. According to Wikipedia, “in his sophomore season in 1965, Conigliaro led the league in home runs (32), becoming the youngest home run champion in American League history.”
That year, he released “Why Don’t They Understand”/”Playing The Field” on the small Penn-Tone label. It was picked up by RCA, for whom Tony recorded a second 45 arranged by Charlie Calello, “Little Red Scooter”.
“Why Don’t They Understand” reached #10 for George Hamilton in 1958. The song was also the title of an EP released in the UK by Cliff Richard in 1964.
Charlie Calello was the arranger on a number of productions by Al Kasha at this time, including recordings by Vi Velasco, Jimmy Clanton, the 4 Evers and Vinnie Monte.
