Glitter and Grit - A Portrait of the Life of an Artisanal Miner in Uganda is a documentary produced by the African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) in partnership with the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI). This short film explores the world of artisanal gold mining in Eastern Uganda. It follows artisanal miner, Monica Anyede, for a day, capturing the realities she confronts in this demanding yet potentially rewarding industry.
Employing hundreds of thousands of people across Uganda, artisanal mining provides a source of income for many, but it also presents significant challenges like environmental damage, health risks, and social disparities.
Glitter and Grit goes beyond Monica's individual story. It shows the complex issues that shape the experiences of women and men in artisanal mining in rural Uganda.
This short film was produced as part of a broader ACME and NRGI programme that seeks to build the capacity of Ugandan media to report on extractive industries with depth and insight.
