The game is set in the year 20,031. The player takes on the role of a skilled terraforming pilot named Trent Hawkins. Having retired from the military to live a more tranquil life, for the past three years Trent has worked in the terraformation industry as a pilot, scouting out habitable locations on newly terraformed planets. His latest assignment is to Tyrian, one such planet, near Hazudra territory. First episode focus on Trent Hawkins as he escapes from Tyrian and the pursuing Microsol forces and seeks refuge with the Gencore Tech Alliance.

Tyrian is a vertically-scrolling shoot 'em up for the MS-DOS operating system, originally developed by World Tree Games and published by Epic MegaGames in 1995. The game received a few updates along the way, which included new features and bug fixes. The last official release was Tyrian 2000, published in 1999 by XSIV Games. The game was officially released as freeware in 2004. Tyrian was programmed by Jason Emery, illustrated by Daniel Cook, and its music composed by Alexander Brandon and Andras Molnar.

In arcade mode, the player picks up the front guns, rear guns, and sidekicks along the way, instead of purchasing them. Front weapons are upgraded by picking up purple bubbles from destroyed enemies. The number of purple orbs required increases exponentially to advance to higher power levels. Front and rear guns can also be upgraded to the next level by picking up powerup pods, which are found by destroying a specific enemy. The ship, shields, and generators are not upgradeable, although the player is given a medium attribute ship.

Christmas Mode is a secret special mode on Tyrian which is automatically activated if the computer's date is set to December. When active, all of player's ships and weapons graphics are modified with a Christmas motif and all the narration voice is replaced as well. The changes are purely cosmetic, not affecting the gameplay.
