Neil Peart's philosophy of learning a song "correctly," then playing it the same way every single show in order to give ALL fans the very possible best version of a song, was a massive influence to me. Of course, I did have and enjoy moments in the show to change things up, but not when it came to unison parts, or parts that were "air-drummed."
I grabbed FOUR live videos of OUTCRY and MIXED EACH VIDEO'S AUDIO at the same volume. SO YOU'RE HEARING the AUDIO from ALL FOUR videos. The Luna Park one is cleaner for instruments, so more detail sticks out from that than the live venue ones. The one of the drums from the top is drums only, so that sticks out in the panning more. But, they're mixed up the same per the waves on my video software. No EQs are changed. They're all raw. You'll hear the venue "room" in the ones on the left. If nothing else, you can watch any of the four performances and hear the same parts save my hitting a different stack, but still a stack, or no crash in one video, but a crash in the other 3. Fun stuff.
I never ever watched two of these ever, then put them together for humor for myself to see how consistent I was, or was not. I thought Channel followers might enjoy this. Here was my goal: to dig deep to give every, single, solitary audience my best after I decided on the part for a song.
Actually, someone in 'a past band' once said to me, "in the old days, a musician showed up for an orchestra gig and had to read parts EXACTLY as written, or they could not be part of the performance." So.... I played the parts exactly as written as you can see and on previous tours before DT.
I would've loved to "wing" it, or play with no video production click track, but the job was the job. I hope that offers CONTEXT to my doing this. It was 4,787,924 times MORE DIFFICULT to play DT to a click than when I did that without out on the ADToE tour to non ADToE songs, save a few sections in some songs using a sample on top of the band. Not all songs were to a click track on that tour, but the consistency and accuracy of the entire band, as well as some of my past bands, was simply staggering. What a joy to have played with so many great musicians.
HERE'S THE POINT: It was another zillion X's more difficult to remember every single drum hit for 2-3 hours and place it exactly in time. If you want to learn HOW I can do this, then be a part of my RK LAB. I am active in it. I am actually reading, responding, reacting and providing solutions for any and every member that asks me anything.
I posted it because I can share with people HOW I do this; how I remember all the notes; how I write the parts; how I can time it and how I execute it the same way each night.
