The "Death-Ball" Sponge (Chondrocladia sp. nov.)
Deep in the icy waters of the Antarctic, scientists in 2025 captured footage of a predator that looks like a prop from a science fiction film.
The Carnivorous Invertebrate: While most sponges are passive filter feeders that wait for nutrients to float by, the "Death-Ball" is an active hunter. It is covered in tiny, Velcro-like hooks.
The "Trap": When small crustaceans or fish brush against its spherical body, they are instantly snagged. The sponge then slowly envelops and digests its prey over several days.
A New Discovery: This species was only formally identified in early 2025 after a massive iceberg calving event in Antarctica exposed previously unreachable seafloor habitats.
