Transgressive Art History - a lecture by Jorg Scheller [CH], art historian
This lecture gives an introduction into my methodological and content-related approaches to teaching art history. As a professor of art history at an art university that encourages exchange between various disciplines, I see art history as a continuum between what was formerly called "high and low culture", between entertainment and enlightenment, between connoisseurship and criticality. For instance, the heroic avant-gardes of the early 20th century remain opaque without an understanding of early mass media and pop culture. Most of what the avant-gardes 'invented' was anticipated by the decidedly silly spectacles of the Arts incohérents group in late 19th century Paris. In my teaching, I take into account – seriously, thoroughly, academically, playfully – everything from seemingly vulgar comic culture or bodybuilding via social arts practice and heavy metal aesthetics through to aloof autonomous art. This is what I call "transgressive art history". The job of an art historian, as I see it, is to point out where art emerges rather than where it ends; how art takes shape outside the art system; that art is first and foremost a way of doing things in a different, more sophisticated, more idiosyncratic, more self-referential way, be it in a museum or in a pop song.
