Hi my name is Melinda Brown, I’m a professional engineer in the Denver office, and I’m going to tell you a little bit about hydraulic modeling. A hydraulic model is a mathematical model of a fluid flow system such as a water system, a sewer system, or a storm system, and it’s used to analyze systems hydraulic behavior. A hydraulic model is used creating real world data, so GIS data, CAD data, or as built pipeline system data, and you input it into a model to create a physical representation of the real world system. You’d also use topology to represent the ground surface and system loading data that you’d get from your client, so flow metering, water consumption records, telemetered system flows, or you can use estimates from consumer characteristics like population data, land use data, or traffic counts. So, why would our clients hire us for such a thing? Mostly, they are used to create water and sewer master plans, meet EPA regulatory requirements, or identify a method to improve system reliability and efficiency bu evaluating existing or future systems. The model is used to predict pressures, provide firefighting capabilities, identify bottlenecks, overloaded pipes, poor turnover in tanks or short circuiting in tanks, identify areas of high water aged or closed valves or clasped pipes, find pressure surges or sewer overflows in your system. Overall a model is a tool to plan infrastructure improvements, develop operational maintenance strategies and proactively manage a client’s system.
