When RTI activists tried to obtain copies of the degrees and marksheets, the universities either denied access or claimed the information was “personal.” This secrecy fueled speculation that something was being hidden.

The controversy also reached the judiciary. Several petitions were filed demanding that Modi’s degrees be disclosed in the public domain. The Central Information Commission (CIC) initially ordered Gujarat University to release details, but later the matter was challenged, and the Supreme Court became involved.

In 2023, the Supreme Court of India dismissed a petition that sought public disclosure of PM Modi’s degree certificates, calling it an unnecessary attempt to question his educational qualifications. The Court even imposed fines on petitioners, saying it was a misuse of RTI laws.
