Winmeen Natyalaya's first Salangai Pooja was a heartfelt and memorable milestone for the Bengaluru-based Bharatanatyam dance school, led by Guru Smt. Vinmeenlilly. Held on February 8th, 2026 (with some preparations around early January), it marked the students' sacred entry into wearing ghungroos after dedicated training. The event brimmed with devotion, divine blessings, graceful performances, and euphoria, celebrated as a grand, special occasion that filled everyone with joy and pride in preserving classical dance traditions.
Salangai Pooja (also called Salangai Puja, Gajje Pooja, or Ghungroo Pooja) is a sacred traditional ceremony in Bharatanatyam, the classical dance form from South India.
It marks a key milestone for a student (usually after several years of rigorous training in basic steps called adavus and foundational techniques) when they are deemed ready to wear salangai — the sacred ankle bells (ghungroos) that produce rhythmic sounds with footwork.
During the ritual:
The salangai are placed on an altar, worshipped with flowers, fruits, lamps, mantras, and offerings — often dedicated to Lord Nataraja (the cosmic dancer).
The guru (teacher) blesses and ties the bells to the student's ankles for the first time.
This symbolizes devotion, discipline, respect for the art, guru, and divine, and readiness for public performances.
It is typically followed by the dancer's first semi-formal recital (half arangetram or margam showcase) and serves as a prelude to the full debut solo performance (arangetram). The ceremony emphasizes spiritual commitment over mere ornamentation — the bells are treated as sacred, not casual accessories.
