Engine Room Round: A comprehensive inspection of the engine room to ensure the safe and efficient operation of all machinery and systems. During the round, the engineer officer on watch (EOOW) will check:
Main engine: RPM, load, exhaust temperature, lube oil pressure and temperature, jacket water temperature, fuel oil pressure and temperature, vibration levels.
Auxiliary engines: RPM, load, exhaust temperature, lube oil pressure and temperature, jacket water temperature, fuel oil pressure and temperature, vibration levels.
Pumps: Flow rates, pressures, vibration levels.
Heat exchangers: Tube and shell side temperatures, pressure drops.
Piping systems: For leaks, corrosion, and proper insulation.
Valves: For proper operation and position.
Gauges and instruments: For accuracy and proper functioning.
Safety systems: Fire extinguishers, fire alarms, sprinkler systems, emergency stop buttons.
Ventilation system: For proper airflow and temperature control.
Lighting: For adequate illumination.
Cleanliness: For a safe and efficient working environment.
The EOOW will also record any observations or readings in the engine room logbook. Regular engine room rounds are essential for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the ship's machinery.
