Fortuna Metals (ASX: FUN) CEO Tom Langley on two new technical hires at the company's rutile and graphite project in Malawi.
Richard Stockwell has spent 26 years as a mineral sands geologist. He's made rutile discoveries in Africa and Australasia and taken them through to resource estimates and production. At Fortuna, he's building the exploration target due end of month and laying the groundwork for a maiden inferred resource later this year.
Dave Bougourd is a metallurgist who ran Iluka Resources' Eneabba mine. Fortuna has 675 drill holes in the ground with high-grade rutile from surface and aircore drilling starting in May. Bougourd's job is to figure out how to turn that into a concentrate pure enough to sell to titanium producers.
Rutile is the starting point for titanium metal. It goes into aircraft frames, defence applications and advanced manufacturing. The US imports all of its titanium, and the humanoid robotics buildout is adding a new layer of demand on top of markets that are already in structural deficit.
