Depressor Anguli Oris Muscle
Depressor anguli oris is a facial expression muscle.
It is a triangular, superficial muscle of the lower face.
It lies deep to platysma and helps in expressions of sadness and disapproval.
Origin
Oblique line of mandible
Near the mental tubercle
Insertion
Angle of mouth
Blends with orbicularis oris
Nerve Supply
Facial nerve (VII cranial nerve)
Marginal mandibular branch
Action
Depresses the angle of mouth
Pulls the mouth downward and laterally
Produces expressions of sadness, grief, or frowning
Unique Feature
Acts independently on each side.
In facial nerve paralysis, the mouth is pulled toward the normal side due to unopposed action.
Important clinical indicator in lower motor neuron facial palsy.
