Rio Grande Southern number 20 is one of the last remnants of one of the most storied narrow gauge lines in the world. Originally built for the Florence and Cripple Creek in 1899 by the Schenectady locomotive works, the precursor of ALCO. Eventually due to a flood and nearby competition the Florence and Cripple Creek’s assets were liquidated, its locomotives went to other railroads like the Rio Grande, the Uintah, and the Espee’s Narrow Gauge lines. The 20 was sold to the Rio Grande Southern in 1916, became its 20, and began running the next year.
