A tutorial for the decorative double coin knot I use pretty consistently in my ties. It can make a simpler tie seem a bit more complex and artistic. The ends of the double coin knot end on the same side they began with and you can use it to join two ropes together if they are not load baring. Note that I keep saying decorative throughout. You can use double coins for a karada where you would normally use an overhand knot on the main rope going down the front to separate sections, things along those lines. You can use one single rope to make this decoration anywhere along the length of your rope of your choosing.
Practice this one several times over an extended period (weeks/months). This is a use it or lose it kind of tie. I had to learn how to do this one three or four separate times to get it down and memorized. Once I realized it's just a weave, it clicked. Enjoy! [And yes, I called the rope string. Making videos flusters me haha]

The double coin knot was first created in Ancient China, around 300 bc. It was tied with red rope for good luck and symbolized the circle of life. A few hundred years later it began to be used for macrame and was renamed the Josephine Knot. Now it symbolized eternal love (awww). It even made its way West and evolved into complicated celtic knots.
Nowadays, in shibari, it is not a functional tie, but a decorative one. Instead of using a simple knot for a join, you can use this beautiful creature to make it more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. It also lays flat rather than a big knot ball against the skin so it is more comfortable for the bottom. If you regularly practice this tie, it can help you gain more dexterity with the rope. Now....get out there and get creative!
