Dear Friends, in this last year i have done several retunings on different handpans and Hangs… i really love to retune and restore especially old instruments like first gen Hang (i also love to restore old motorbike! ;-)
Few weeks ago i swapped one of my instrument for a beautiful Hang Yu Diao, it was in very good aesthetic condition, but it sounded truly bad and needed a deep retuning especially on high tones… so as i had a dream of a scale that i can't create on the Blesspan diameter, because of strange impedance in the Bb4… i decided to tune this beautiful scale named Yu Shang Diao on this Hang… Enjoy the video of every step i have done during the restoring…

As i received critics about the processes of this restoration here you can read, why i have done this kind of restoration/conversion on this "personal" Hang;

First of all, we are talking about MY PERSONAL HANG, i have retuned several Hang and other handpans (as autodidact) but i have never cut an hang/handpan that is not mine or from me, This Hang has been cut because i rescaled from Yu Diao to a lowest scale, Yu Shang Diao, for myself, so, rescaled few tones could not be done comfortably on a closed one.

There are 3 different reasons, why i opened it;

First of all, shells didn't match perfectly, you can find this wrong process in several handpans, and you can see it, looking at the glue between the shells... somewhere you will see more glue, somewhere less glue, this gives problems to some tones that sound less than others because of tensions.

Second, to retune a tone for example from C to Bb stable, is COMFORTABLE to work on an open instrument!

Third, high notes C5 and D5 (in this case) had the harmonics of third and not fifth, this is a "famous" caratteristic of the first Gen Hang, that gives also that timbre that let you identify a first Gen Hang everywhere! so i decided (one more time, ON MY PERSONAL HANG) to tune fifth! cause i prefer the cleanest sound as possible.

Than, an important thing, i'm an autodidact researcher, nobody teached me anything about steel and tuning, but i understood trying and trying.. that is very very important to keep the ORIGINAL timbre and sound of the instrument that we are going to retune, especially like an orginal Hang
