Hamamatsucho Station is a key Yamanote Line stop, surrounded by modern office towers and the historic Shiba Park area. Our route brings us from there to Zojo-ji Temple, the majestic head temple of Jodo-shu Buddhism founded in 1393 and chosen by Tokugawa Ieyasu as the family temple in 1598. Its striking vermilion Sanmon Gate (1622) was being renovated, but we were able to visit the serene Daiden hall, and the rows of stone Jizo statues protecting unborn children stand beautifully against the bright daylight. Directly behind the temple rises Tokyo Tower, Japan’s 333-meter orange-and-white icon completed in 1958 as a symbol of postwar rebirth, gleaming brilliantly in the sunshine.
Sorry for the annoying helicopter noises. On this day, the President of the US was visiting Tokyo, and the swarms of helicopters all around were part of the extraordinary security apparatus.
