Kavaledurga is a fort resting on the top of a hill amidst a dense forest and it requires a trek of at least 4 km to reach the summit.
Fort is open between 8.30AM and 5.30PM.

It is about 18 km from Theerthahalli and about 80 km from Shimoga.
Today, the fort lies in ruins, but continues to stun visitors with its exceptional architecture and historical vibe. With a backdrop of the Western Ghats and surrounded by lush greenery, the fort is constructed of granite blocks, complete with nine to 12 meters high fort walls and five levels with a gate at each level.
Within the fort were originally 15 temples, of which only three are left. Besides this, there are remnants of a forgotten era, including stone artefacts, and ruins of a palace, stables of horses and elephants and other relics.
With a circumference of eight kilometres, the fort covers a considerable area.
Keladi Rani Chennamma was crowned in this fort. Keladi kings ruled their kingdom for 60 years from this fort. It is also said that Rani Chennamma defeated the mighty Mughal army and protected Shivaji’s son Rajaram from this fort.
The fort was built in the 9th century. Later in the 14th century it was renovated by King Cheluva Rangappa of Belagutti.
It was a bastion of Keladi kings who were independent after the fall of the Vijayanagara kingdom
Earlier, the kingdom had been established at Keladi and fort was built at Ikkeri, Bidanur.
The hill country of Kavaledurga was in the possession of the brothers of Tholettamma and Mundigethamma.The Keladi nayakaru defeated these brothers and took over the Kavaledurga fort and ruled it as Bhuvanagiri Durga.

Kavaledurga was sufficiently destroyed during the invasion of Mysore king Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan in the 18th century.
Behind the palace a stepwell with a peculiar T-shape also survives – a testament to the water storage and management techniques used in the olden days.
Shikareshwara temple is at summit where we can enjoy panoramic view of nature.
