Manila South Cemetery was established in 1920 when the city of Manila purchased a 25-hectare parcel of land from the Zóbel de Ayala family's Hacienda San Pedro de Macati. The city decided to create a new cemetery south of the city center to accommodate the growing population and relieve overcrowding in other burial grounds. The land acquisition was legally finalized by Ordinance 726, and the cemetery was opened to the public as a new burial site.
