Blue Cliff Record No 43.(Korean Zen/22.10.01)
Hello everyone, today, Let's look at No 43 in Blue Cliff Record
This Hwadu story is, A monk asked Tung Shan, "When cold and heat come, how can we avoid them?"
Tung Shan said, "Why don't you go to the place where there is no cold or heat?"
The monk said, "What is the place where there is no cold or heat?"
Tung Shan said, "When it's cold, the cold kills you; when it's hot, the heat kills you."
what does it mean? this last sentence can be translated like this: When it's cold, be thoroughly cold, and when it's hot, be thoroughly hot.
Actually, this monk's question is, he is asking about the original place where heat or cold cannot approach. But the answer is unexpected, the answer is that you will be very cold when it is cold, and you will be very hot when it is hot. How can this be a place to avoid the cold and heat! We need to be able to read the meaning between the lines in zen words.
Let's look at the zen master SeolDu's verse 1
He lets down his hand(compassion), but still, it's the same as a ten thousand fathom cliff:
Why must correct and biased be in an arrangement?
The ancient crystal palace reflects the bright moon,
The sly hound [of Han(nation name)] vainly runs up the stairs.
This verse's meaning is. . this answer even baffles people by creating another riddle(throw a person into a panic). There is no fixed answer, and it depends on the situation. Bright and clear, but the silly sly dog can't find its way. What we're reading zen record is to look at the world of Zen, the world of enlightenment. With this world of enlightenment in mind, we are heading for this path of freedom. If you have your Hwadu, and investigate it continuously. But, If it's not, Today, I will introduce one Hwadu.
One day a monk asked zen master Joju, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch coming from the West? (Why did Boridhara come to the east?" Joju said, "The cypress tree in the garden." The monk said, "Don't use objects to teach people with, Teacher." zen master Joju said, "I've never used objects to teach people." A monk asked again, "Why Boridharma come to the east?" Zen master Joju said, "The cypress tree in the garden. "Please try to investigate this Hwadu. Hwadu is, could be said a compressed word or the word of condensation, of all words, languages.
I will add a comment to this Hwadu 2
We need to find our own home of mind.
If we find our own home of mind, the ship will go on the waves.
But, If we can't find our mind's hometown, the ship will be washed away by the waves.
Please refer to the script below.
Today Let's call it a day.

verse 1
자비로운 가르침이 도리어 만 길 절벽과도 같으니
정(正)과 편(偏)이 어찌 미리 계획된 것이리
유리의 옛 궁전에 달은 저리 밝은데
영리한 개는 부질없이 계단을 오르네!
comment 1
마음의 고향을 찾아야 하리.
마음의 고향을 찾으면 배가 파도를 타고 가는 것이고
마음의 고향을 찾지 못하면 배가 파도에 떠밀려 가는 것이다.
this answer even baffles people by creating another riddle(throw a person into a panic). There is no fixed answer, and it depends on the situation. Bright and clear, but the silly sly dog can't find its way(대답이 수수께끼를 하나 더 만들어서 사람들을 당황케 한다. 정해진 대답은 없고 상황에 따른다. 환하고 분명한데, 어리석은 교활한 개가 길을 찾지 못한다).
