Part 3 in the series diagramming a 600 gallon rain bench system inside a carport, being filled with 2- Saving Rain diverters in 2 downspouts, pressurized with a 1/2hp pump to an outside spigot, and now adding a first flush filter and showing how to winterize the diverters in cold climates.
First Flush system is custom, just 4 sticks of 10' long 4" PVC pipes with fittings, so about 26 gallons of the very first runoff from the roof (this is the crappiest with leaves, raccoon & bird droppings, shingles, whatever) fills this part and then starts to fill the main reservoirs.
The caps are loose, so this first flush filter slowly drains after the rain has stopped, allowing for 26 more gallons of first flush' from the next rainfall.
Then see how the filter handles are removed to plug the holes in the Saving Rain diverter, and voila! winterized. (diverter from Saving Rain, www.savingrain.com, pvc from Mendards, RainBench DIY kits from Second Rain, www.secondrain.com)
