In today’s Japan van life travel vlog we’re continuing our Hokkaido trip close to the popular tourist destination of Hakodate City with a visit to our own private outdoor onsen right next to the Pacific Ocean (and a hike up an active volcano)! This might be Japan’s most tattoo friendly onsen and with the beautiful backdrop of the sea, we were shocked that we had it all to ourselves! The onsen uses completely natural hot spring water and can be accessed for free at low tide. Users can choose whether to bathe in their birthday suits or swimsuits, but for the sake of good taste and to keep things PG, we chose the latter!

This place is a must visit location is Hokkaido and only a short 30 minute drive from the starting point of the Mt. E (Also known as Mt. Esan) hiking trail. Visit early if you want to experience a private outdoor onsen before the easy hike up one of Hokkaido’s most underrated mountains! The hike up this relatively small mountain in Japan is suitable for beginners and makes a great day trip from Hakodate City if you want to see some volcanic activity as the active stratovolcano continuously belches sulphuric gas. You cannot miss Hakodate’s best kept secret location if you visit Hokkaido!
