For Hyper Functional, Ultra Healthy, artist Rebecca Jagoe leads an embroidery workshop that reflects on the power of language as a tool to help exercise personal boundaries and to re-engage with time.

Through the act of making a text memento, you are invited to recognise the empowerment in saying no. Based on the Western medieval practice of textual amulets, you will make your own embroidered amulet and an accompanying carrying pouch, out of scrap fabric. The amulet, which you can carry with you, serves as reminder to be less productive, to rest more and to reengage with circadian and seasonal time.

During the workshop Jagoe will take you on a meandering train of thought on the power of words and language to create worlds and create ourselves. They will cover the everyday magic of performative speech acts, the imperialist violence of standardised clock time in Western culture and more, taking reference from the likes of Sylvia Wynter, Judith Butler and Legacy Russell.

The workshop is about slowing down; you can participate as much or as little as you would like or are able. At the beginning of the workshop, Jagoe will describe the entire structure of the session, so you will know what to expect, and there will be no unanticipated surprises.

Rebecca Jagoe is an Irish artist based in Wales, whose practice encompasses performance, sculpture, textiles, writing, and drawing. Their work is a material memoir which examines how their own experiences of illness and gender, have been informed by specific Western cultural narratives. In particular, their work explores how within European culture, the Feminine is constructed at the meeting point of medical rhetoric and the aesthetics of mainstream fashion.
