GTA IV Gameplay on PS3 in 2026 - Still the Darkest GTA Ever

Today, I’m revisiting Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition on the PlayStation 3, and yes — I’m playing it in 2026.

I’ve completed GTA IV three times before, all on PC. But this is my first-ever full experience on PS3, and honestly, it hit way harder than I expected. GTA doesn’t need an introduction. It’s one of the greatest game series of all time. But for me personally, GTA IV is the best GTA ever made.

🌃 Atmosphere & Story
Liberty City in GTA IV is dark, grounded, and brutally realistic. This isn’t a power fantasy. It’s a bleak immigrant story about broken dreams, crime, and consequences.

The tone is heavy. The characters feel human. The story stays with you long after the credits roll. Even in 2026, GTA IV’s narrative feels more mature and focused than most open-world games today.

For me, this is easily one of the strongest stories Rockstar has ever written, and while many would argue San Andreas takes the crown, GTA IV is my personal favorite and always will be.

🚗 Gameplay & Physics
One thing GTA IV still does better than any other GTA game is car physics.

• Vehicles feel heavy and grounded
• You can feel the weight when driving
• Crashes feel impactful and realistic

No other GTA game has matched this driving model. Yes, the game is more limited than San Andreas or GTA V. You can’t buy properties. You can’t deeply customize cars. Side activities are more restrained.

But what GTA IV lacks in freedom, it makes up for in immersion.

📦 Complete Edition Content
This is the Complete Edition, which includes both major story expansions:

• The Lost and Damned
• The Ballad of Gay Tony

Both DLCs are excellent and expand Liberty City in completely different directions. They’re still some of the best story expansions Rockstar has ever released.

🎮 Performance on PlayStation 3
Let’s talk performance, because this is 2008 tech running on PS3 hardware with just 256MB of RAM.

• Targets 30fps
• Typically hovers between 25–30fps
• Visuals are noticeably softer than PC
• Occasional dips during heavy action

Is it perfect? No.
Is it playable? Absolutely.

Millions of people played GTA IV this way back in the day, and playing it now genuinely feels like stepping back into the 2009–2010 era of PS3 vs Xbox 360 rivalries.

Despite its age, GTA IV still holds together remarkably well on PS3.

💭 Small Critiques
• No modern console version available
• Performance can dip during intense scenes
• Limited customization compared to other GTA titles

💭 My Verdict
GTA IV is still a masterpiece in 2026.

It deserves a remake or at least a proper remaster so new players can experience it on modern consoles. With GTA V dominating for over a decade and GTA VI on the horizon, GTA IV feels overlooked — and it shouldn’t be.
