About Yomari

Yomari, also called Yamari, is a beloved delicacy of the Newar community in Nepal. It is a steamed dumpling made with a rice flour outer shell and filled with sweet ingredients such as chaku (a type of molasses). Yomari holds great cultural significance and is a centerpiece of the Yomari Punhi festival.

The triangular shape of the Yomari is said to symbolize one half of the shadkona—a sacred symbol representing Saraswati and wisdom. The name "Yomari" originates from two Nepal Bhasa words:

Ya: meaning "to like"
Mari: meaning "delicacy"
Thus, Yomari translates to "a delicacy that is well-loved."
