Naples Zoo lion boys were transferred to Brevard Zoo this month as part of the Species Survival Plan® (SSP). The SSP is a cooperatively managed breeding program that works to create sustainable populations of threatened and endangered species within zoos across the country.
In 2013, first time mom, Shani and her mate, Masamba, were genetically matched for breeding by the SSP. On May 14, 2019, Shani successfully gave birth to the three cubs, Karoo (Ka-roo), Ruaha (Ru-ah-ha), and Chobe (Cho-bee). These were the first lion cubs to be born at Naples Zoo in over 30 years.
Eventually the cubs may be separated to get paired with females for breeding. For now, Karoo, Ruaha, and Chobe will live together and celebrate their 3rd birthday on May 14th at their new home.
African lions are classified as vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Overall lion numbers continue to decline due to illegal hunting, reductions in prey populations, and habitat loss.
