We embarked on a nostalgic journey to Alice, the town where I was born. Our spirits were dampened upon arrival as we discovered the devastating fate that had befallen the once magnificent Amatola Hotel, a place my parents often reminisced about. It, and the Royal Hotel, were both places where they would go dancing back in the day. A somber drive past the abandoned station further revealed the town's decline. However, our spirits were uplifted when we found the well-preserved Victoria Hospital, where my own birth took place, standing as a testament to the town's enduring past. The unexpected delight came with our visit to Fort Hare University, where the remnants of the old British fort were impeccably maintained.
