Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has admitted that begging in the country has evolved into a fully organised business rather than an act driven by poverty. He said organised networks hire children, women and even people posing as disabled on contract, generating profits running into millions. Asif further stated that these begging mafias send large numbers of beggars to Gulf countries, a practice he said has contributed to visa restrictions imposed on Pakistani nationals. He also revealed that several individuals linked to these networks have acquired large houses in posh areas.
