Описание: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Wednesday the development of its largest-ever infrastructure project: a high-speed rail network in the Toronto-Québec City corridor dubbed Alto.

Internal Trade and Transport Minister Anita Anand detailed the three phases of the ambitious project, revealing that the first — the procurement phase — was already complete. The Cadence Consortium was selected as a partner in Alto, and now the co-development phase begins. That will include a $3.9 billion government investment over five years, before moving into the final phase of construction.

Alto will reportedly span roughly 1,000 km, with 100 per cent electric trains capable of reaching up to 300 km/hour speeds. Anticipated Alto stops will be in Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montréal, Laval, Trois-Rivières, and Quebec City.

Amid strained relationships with U.S. President Donald Trump — who wants to absorb Canada as its 51st state — and economic unrest triggered by his threats of 25 per cent tariffs, Trudeau says Alto will "turbocharge" economic growth by "creating thousands of good-paying jobs, improving productivity and reducing emissions."
