Let's Play Dragon Quest IX! Grand Finale: All Legacy Bosses

Legacy Bosses are bosses from Dragon Quest's past, at least one from DQ1-8. They can be obtained in varied ways, like quest rewards, grotto rewards and interacting with friends. With Wi-Fi down, several of these options are gone forever without friends or cheating.

Each boss can be given the experience from the fight, which levels them up. This makes them stronger, gives them new moves and more turns, and changes their drop table. Certain equips and all the colored Orbs can only be obtained from fighting and re-fighting these bosses. They cap out at level 99, thus requiring refighting each boss 98 times to get everything, assuming you got every drop you wanted immediately.

I fought them in order of strength from what a lot of sources recommended. I'll list my thoughts on each below, though battle strategies won't be too in-depth since their options at Level 1 are limited.

Baramos: This is the fake-out final boss of Dragon Quest 3, with one of my favorite themes in the series. He seems to crit a lot more than the other bosses did, and is fond of AoE spells.

Murdaw: The first Dread Fiend in Dragon Quest 6 is significantly easier here than in his own game. Status effects and Fire Breath are coming.

Dhoulmagus: I know precious little of Dragon Quest 8, but he's basically the Baramos of it. Ice spells and brutal physical combos are coming your way!

DragonLord: The very first final boss of the series is pretty simple. He's a big ol dragon, you're getting fire breath and bites to the face.

Psaro: The Manslayer of Dragon Quest 4 fortunately goes down much quicker here as well. Sporting only one form instead of his original eight, he's got nasty physical attacks alongside his penchant to cast Kabuff.

Nimzo: The Grandmaster of Nadiria in Dragon Quest 5, Nimzo loves Kaboom. He'll cast Bounce and Kasap as well, leaving you with increasingly dwindling options to actually attack.

Malroth: The God of Destruction fought in Dragon Quest 2 loves spitting fire and ice breath at you. Insulatle won't be much help after Disruptive Wave enters the mix.

Estark: Dragon Quest 4's Lord of the Underworld is really fond of frying you with Kafrizzle and slicing you in half with his massive swords.

Mortamor: The final boss of Dragon Quest 6 is incredibly difficult due to the fact that you have to deal with three enemies at once. His Eye Gleam attack will put anyone to sleep 100% of the time, and that's dangerous. Take out the hands first, they know healing moves.

Zoma: The true final boss of Dragon Quest 3 features incredible physical prowess, Disruptive Wave, ice spells and most dangerous, the ability to move twice. It's gonna be a quick fight either way.

Orgodemir: My favorite final boss in the series, Dragon Quest 7's equivalent of Lucifer doesn't mess around. He can terrify your party with a scream and send you to hell with his flaming breath. No Godhand class to save you this time!

Rhapthorne: The final boss of Dragon Quest 8 fires off the most powerful spells possible while battering you with physical moves. That ball fling attack can devour an unlucky party member.

Nokturnus: The secret boss of Dragon Quest 6 has always been the most powerful foe in every game he appears in, and this is no exception. Nokturnus is blindingly fast, hits like a dump truck on steroids, can cast all sorts of nasty buffs on himself, Disruptive Wave and fire breath. This is an extreme difficulty jump, and beating Nokturnus deserves a pat on the back.

I definitely recommend finishing Armamentalist's level 40 quest to get the Armamentalist's Album item, which when held, allows Fource spells to affect the entire party. Fource helps out IMMEASURABLY against these foes.
