Ex-US intelligence officials admit to hacking crimes on UAE payroll | DarkMatter

Описание: Three former U.S. intelligence operatives, (Marc Baier, Ryan Adams, and Daniel Gericke) admitted to providing hacking technology to the UAE and agreed to pay nearly $1.7 million to resolve the criminal charges in an agreement with the DOJ.

The court documents said that the three men worked for DarkMatter, a company that is effectively an arm of the Emirati government. They assisted the UAE to gain access to “information and data from thousands of targets around the world”.

According to the former DarkMatter employees, the Emirati officials targeted the computer systems in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world.

These operations were also carried out against the Emirati dissidents and journalists. Baier and his group purchased computer tools from the U.S. companies to use in hacking operations.

In two instances, DarkMatter paid about $750,000 and $1.3 million. Two former employees, Lori Stroud and Jonathan Cole, had left the Emirati company after growing trouble about DarkMatter’s hacking and targeting of American citizens.

The court documents described how the three Americans helped the UAE design, procure and deploy hacking capabilities over several years. This year, the CIA sent a blunt letter to former officers warning them against going to work for foreign governments.

The letter, written by the spy agency’s head of counterintelligence, said it was seeing a “detrimental trend” of foreign governments, either directly or indirectly, hiring former intelligence officials to build up their spying capabilities.
