This lovely song shares a sentiment with a popular tune from "My Fair Lady" but I'm pretty sure Edward Nainoa's composition came first. The Hawaiian lyrics are aimed more at seduction while the English language song is a lament. I was inspired to create an instrumental arrangement of "Ua Noho Au A Kupa" by a Mike Kaawa vocal version I recorded some years ago: • Mike Kaawa "Ua Noho Au A Kupa"
When I set out to arrange a song I usually search through my record collection and YouTube to sample other approaches. There are some lovely versions out there by a variety of artists including Gabby Pahinui and Atta Isaacs, Kapono Beamer, the Cazimeros, and Hui Ohana. I borrowed a little here and little there to come up with this arrangement.
I'm playing the song using taropatch open G tuning, D G D G B D from low pitch to high, and I'm using my always sweet Kathy Wingert Model E guitar. The recording was done with a pair of DPA 4061 miniature mics plugged into my Zoom F6. I used REAPER to tweak the audio a bit. I shot the video with my Panasonic Lumix GH5 and edited the clip in Edius 9.
