We all want to change something, whether in our lives, in our relationships, or in the world. But the cosmos doesn’t respond to wishes alone. Nothing magical happens until we make an intentional move toward a chosen destination. In December, we experience a complex dance between the authoritarian rules of Saturn and the visionary idealism of Neptune that is emboldened by the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Mars traveling through buoyant Sagittarius. The seeds of inspiration are encapsulated in the Sagittarius New Moon on December 19 at 5:43 pm PST. However, this lunation’s dynamic square to mystical Neptune illuminates the blurry lines between our rational aspirations and our illusory fantasies. Furthermore, the New Moon forms an irritating quincunx with unpredictable Uranus, implying that too much change too fast might only leave us spinning in circles as we search for solid ground. Following our impulses willy-nilly is a recipe for instability and insecurity; nevertheless, inaction is unacceptable if we want to turn our dreams into reality.
The Gemini Full Moon on December 4 at 3:13 pm PST is our cosmic wake-up call to focus on the future as much as possible. The Gemini Moon reminds us of the importance of incisive research so we possess the best data possible for envisioning our long-term strategy while the Sagittarius Sun radiates between ravishing Venus and reckless Mars. We must carefully consider what we want (Venus) and how we intend to get it (Mars) if we wish to make progress in our financial, romantic, or creative pursuits. Thankfully, Gemini’s ruling planet Mercury in perceptive Scorpio is moving into the Grand Water Trine, making its exact connections with prosperous Jupiter and practical Saturn on December 6 and 7. Tapping into this energetic and emotional flow enables us to trust our intuition when it comes to making important decisions.
Idyllic Neptune continues to play a starring role as it ends its retrograde phase on December 10 while holding its position near realistic Saturn throughout the entire month. The conjunction of this planetary pair builds toward its perfection on February 20, 2026. Until then, we are increasingly concerned with how Neptune distorts mundane reality while Saturn reveals the necessary role of discipline and dedication if we hope to manifest our dreams. Meanwhile, the flowing Jupiter-Saturn trine continues to widen all month, emphasizing the need to act sooner rather than later. With Saturn and Neptune in Pisces and Jupiter in Cancer, the movement of Venus, Mercury, and the Moon hold a Grand Water Trine in place as they navigate the late degrees of fixed Scorpio until December 17. Being more in touch with our feelings deepens our self-awareness, but it’s not a constructive use of the cosmic flow if we find ourselves drowning in an ocean of emotions. Leaning into healthy forms of self-expression encourages our personal growth.
December offers us plenty of energetic shifts as each of the inner planets changes sign. Mental Mercury leads the parade as it leaves the emotionally intense realms of Scorpio to begin the next part of its journey through philosophical Sagittarius on December 11. The Sun’s square to taskmaster Saturn on December 16 might feel like a setback, but this sobering reality check also points out where we need to put our attention to succeed. The Sun squares nebulous Neptune on December 20, amplifying our fantasies and confusing our forward trajectory. Meanwhile, Mars, the Sun, and Venus step into masterful Capricorn on December 14, 21, and 24, respectively. The Sun’s shift into Capricorn on the 21st at 7:02 am PST marks the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere (the Summer Solstice south of the equator), offering us the opportunity to stop the hustle-bustle long enough to celebrate the change of seasons. Mercury’s square to Saturn on December 29 tests our integrity and reveals where we are stuck in old patterns of thinking. Although we tend to adopt an increasingly serious mindset through this process, our realistic attitude arms us with the necessary tools, skills, and resources to reach our goals.
As we move through the month, the Capricorn planetary buildup is a healthy counterbalance to Neptune’s inflated emphasis on our imagination. Balancing our dreams of the future with a pragmatic perspective of the present can make all the difference between failure and success. It is natural to spend time in reflection as we attempt to understand and integrate the dramatic twists and turns we’ve had to navigate this past year. However, retrospective analysis is only useful if we then turn around to face the new year that’s just around the corner, learn from our mistakes, and apply our hard-earned wisdom to consciously choose the future we wish to create.
