Hwacheonseowon Confucian Academy is dedicated to Ryu Un-ryong (1539–1601), his disciple Kim Yun-an (1562–1620), and his grandnephew Ryu Won-ji (1598–1674). It was founded in 1786 to honor Ryu Un-ryong’s scholarly achievements and virtues. In 1803, Kim Yun-an and Ryu Won-ji also came to be venerated here.

Hwacheonseowon was dismantled during the nationwide decree to abolish Confucian academies in the late 19th century. However, efforts to restore the academy began in 1966, and it was fully reconstructed in 1996.
