The Chancellor chuckled, setting the ink aside. “A princess seeking the tutelage of a statesman? What an unusual request.” He studied her for a long moment before leaning in slightly. “You are clever, but tell me, why should I spend my valuable time on someone who will never sit in council?”

She held his gaze, choosing honesty. “Because understanding power is not only for those who wield it.”

He smiled, but there was no warmth in it. “Indeed. And yet, access to the Emperor is not granted through ink and words alone.” He gestured for her to rise. “Your gift is well-received, but do not waste your efforts in places where they will bear no fruit.”
