With Andi Ewington, Simon Coleby and Jim Burns!
The creative duo behind the the comic book adaptation of Ian Livingstone's FF gamebook Freeway Fighter join original cover artist Jim Burns to discuss how they transformed the classic post-apocalyptic adventure into the first serialised Fighting Fantasy comic.
Andi Ewington is a British comic writer who broke onto the comic scene in 2010 with his critically acclaimed debut original graphic novel Forty-Five. Since then he has written Dark Souls II: Into The Light for Bandai Namco, and Just Cause 3: World On Fire for Square Enix/Avalanche Studios. He has written numerous other titles including BlueSpear, Overrun, Exmortis, S6 X, Sunflower and Red Dog, and is of the main writers at Michael Bay's 451 Media Group.
Simon Coleby began his professional career as a comic book artist in 1987, working for Marvel UK on titles such as Transformers and Death's Head II. In the intervening years, Simon has produced work for Games Workshop, TSR and 2000AD, illustrating stories such as Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper and Jaegir; the character he co-created with Gordon Rennie. He has worked for Marvel Comics and DC in the US, producing art for Punisher 2099, Batman Eternal, The Authority and Royals; Masters Of War, and recently collaborated with Garth Ennis on the Aftershock title Dreaming Eagles.
Jim Burns received his first professional commission as a science fiction artist in 1972, a collection of short stories called Towards Infinity, the artwork created through the media of pencil drawing and light watercolour washes. In the years since, he has carved a name for himself and indeed made a living from his efforts on board, canvas and Mac screen, producing the cover art for Ian Livingstone's Freeway Fighter not once, but twice! He also painted the box art for the Legend Of Zagor board game. His work has earned him three Hugo awards and 13 BSFA awards.
Talk recorded by James Aukett at Fighting Fantasy Fest 2 which took place on Saturday 2nd September 2017 at the University Of West London.
